Visiting Sointula<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Sointula offers a different kind of coastal travel experience. Located on Malcolm Island in northern British Columbia, the community combines a rich cultural history with forests, shorelines, and marine environments that remain largely undeveloped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike larger tourism destinations on the coast, Sointula has never been built around mass tourism. The Sointula Co-operative Store<\/strong>, established in 1909, remains one of the community\u2019s most recognizable landmarks. One of Sointula\u2019s best-known natural attractions is Bere Point Regional Park<\/strong>, located on the northern end of Malcolm Island. The park is internationally recognised for the occasional presence of Northern Resident killer whales that come close to shore and rub along the smooth stones of the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The viewing area at Bere Point allows visitors to observe this behaviour from land when conditions are right. However, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and visitors should approach the experience with patience and respect for the animals. Beyond the orcas, the coastline offers opportunities for observing marine life, exploring beaches, photographing landscapes, and experiencing the region\u2019s forests and shoreline ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail connects visitors with some of the island\u2019s most scenic coastal landscapes. While the Mateoja Heritage Trail<\/strong> provides another way to explore Malcolm Island, passing through forested areas connected to the island\u2019s settlement history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Mitchell Bay<\/strong> and Lions Harbour<\/strong> provide access for marine visitors, including recreational boaters travelling along the coast. The harbour remains an important part of island life, connecting tourism, transportation, and local marine activity. The surrounding waters also provide opportunities for guided wildlife tours, fishing trips, and kayaking excursions. Because coastal conditions can change quickly, visitors unfamiliar with the area should seek local information before travelling by boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
